Fujian province has delivered more than 50 million metric tons of water to Jinmen county in Taiwan since 2018, maintaining a 100 percent compliance rate with water quality standards.
"The Chinese mainland has always attached great importance to and actively supported Jinmen's economic and social development, continuously taking measures to improve the interests and well-being of Jinmen residents," Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on July 8.
The water supply project from coastal Fujian to Jinmen officially began operation on Aug 5, 2018, and has been supplying water for nearly eight years.
As of July 1 this year, Fujian had delivered more than 50 million metric tons of water to Jinmen, accounting for 87 percent of the county's daily tap water supply. The water supplied has met water quality standards throughout the project's operation, according to Chen.
Chen said Fujian's coastal region currently supplies about 22,000 metric tons of water to Jinmen each day, ensuring residents' water needs while helping conserve the county's groundwater resources. The project has addressed pressing livelihood needs and alleviated concerns over future water shortages, earning broad support from Jinmen residents, he added.
"People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family, sharing water from the same river," Chen said, noting that the water supply project has become a model of cross-Strait cooperation in improving people's livelihoods.
He said the mainland will continue to provide Jinmen with safe, high-quality, and clean water, while using water as a bridge to improve the well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
