June 8 marks both World Oceans Day and China's National Ocean Awareness Day. In Xiamen, East China's Fujian province, Chinese white dolphins are nicknamed "Mazu fish" after the revered goddess of the sea. Loved by local residents, they are protected through a simple principle: not disturbing them.
Today, the city government, local communities, and research institutions work together to safeguard these "sea pandas" and the marine environment they depend on.
