Quanzhou showcases traditional culture at China-ASEAN event in Jakarta

A cultural delegation from Quanzhou, Fujian province, presented traditional performances and intangible cultural heritage exhibitions on June 23 in Jakarta, Indonesia, to mark the fifth anniversary of ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations.

The delegation, led by the Jinjiang Nanyin Art Troupe, performed a range of traditional Quanzhou arts, including string puppet shows and a Nanyin performance, an ancient musical tradition originating in Fujian. The event also featured exhibitions of Quanzhou's intangible cultural heritage items, including Jincang embroidery and Dehua white porcelain.

Nearly 200 guests from ASEAN countries attended the event, including Wang Qing, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary and head of China's Mission to ASEAN; Tong Xiaoling, vice-president of the China Public Diplomacy Association; and diplomatic envoys to ASEAN countries.

Quanzhou, a historic port city in Fujian, was one of China's busiest ports during the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368) and has longstanding cultural ties with Southeast Asia.

The event was organized by China's Mission to ASEAN, the China Public Diplomacy Association, and a strategic development study center on China affiliated with the London School of Public Relations.
