A string puppet production from Quanzhou, Fujian province, has been selected for the 10th Chinese Opera Culture Week's showcase of outstanding productions, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Art Department.

The Flaming Mountains, created and produced by the Quanzhou Marionette Show Inheritance and Protection Center (the Quanzhou Marionette Troupe), is the only production from Fujian among the 10 selected nationwide.

Adapted from the Chinese classic Journey to the West, the production tells the story of Tang Monk and his three disciples crossing the Flaming Mountains on their journey westward.

The production combines string, rod, and hand puppetry, along with puppet-and-actor performances. It has been staged more than 4,100 times in China and overseas.

The Chinese Opera Culture Week, hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Beijing municipal government, is a major national cultural event with broad influence. As a core section of the event, the showcase of outstanding productions uses strict selection criteria to identify leading works from across the country based on artistic quality, heritage value, and market reputation.

The Quanzhou Marionette Troupe has made more than 380 overseas visits to more than 80 countries and regions across all five continents, performing at major venues and events including the headquarters of the United Nations, Carnegie Hall, and the National Theatre of Belgium.
