The Haicang wugong ge, a form of Taige performance, is a traditional festival activity prevalent in Haicang district, Xiamen, Fujian province. Once a masquerade procession to honor deities, it has evolved into a lively folk event celebrated across southern Fujian, including Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou, as well as in Taiwan and Kinmen.
Taige performance, or "Yige", as it is known locally, is a performance art in which actors in costume enact stories on platforms, accompanied by traditional Nanyin music. The wugong ge (or zhuang ge, long ge, feng ge), a distinctive form of Yige, is particularly prominent in villages like Dongyu village in Haicang.
This parade involves a series of wooden platforms, each measuring 1.5 to 2 meters in length and 40 to 50 centimeters in width, intricately connected to form a long, centipede-like structure. These platforms are vividly decorated and linked with flexible joints, creating a sinuous movement.
Each platform supports a high stool on which a child sits, dressed as a character from traditional opera stories. The parade progresses slowly, either carried on shoulders or moved on wheels, amidst the sounds of fireworks and traditional music.
The Haicang wugong ge plays a crucial role in preserving Chinese cultural heritage, fostering national cohesion, and promoting unity, serving as a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit and cultural richness of the region.
